About Me

My photo
This make-up artist and esthetician has a (bordering on unhealthy) addiction to all things beauty! No amount of eyeshadows or cream liners will ever be enough! I go giddy for all things girly. Lipgloss might not be able to heal the world, but it can lift a gal's spirits!

Files From The Brow Whisperer

Often clients who come to me with petite brows overdo it on filling them in. The stick powder of pencil on every hair the do have & it makes the brows look very 'blocky." It even accentuates the fact that they do not
This visit was this client's first to me & she said she was sensitive.  I used my hard Cirepil wax above & in between the brows.
I still was conservative in my shaping. I left a few hairs at the beginning of the brow, in hopes that we can grow in that area.
I then gave her a tutorial on brow powder, choosing a shade accenting her auburn hair. That way we  extended the tail of brow a bit to make them look more proportioned. I was able to give an arch & show her how to replicate the look at home. This photo is looking at her straight on, as you can see this helps open up the eye & give the illusion of the lift.

MicrodermMD by Trophy Skin

When I discuss exfoliation with my clients in terms of it being a must & incorporating it into their regimens, most of them think of old school apricot scrubs. There are many types of exfoliation: chemical, enzymatic & manual- like a scrub. Microdermabrasion is a popular professional, yet pricey treatment that polishes the skin like glass while stimulating circulation for an added glow.
The MicrodermMD personal microdermabrasion unit brings that professional treatment into the convenience of your home.  As an esthetician, I know that exfoliation is an essential key to optimal skin health. It reduces the appearance of fine lines, evens out skin tone & allows the other products you apply to work more effectively.
This machine is perfect as we head into summer, as I always advise my clients to taper off from aggressive chemical exfoliants if they know they're going to be outside a lot. The unit comes with filters & a cleansing brush. I also love that there's mirror located in the unit so you're not limited to just using it in front of the vanity. Just cleanse your face thoroughly & you're ready to go.
If the entire concept intimidates you, the computer screen built into the unit even steps you where to place the exfoliating wand during treatment. I like to support my skin with my other hand, while performing the treatment. If you have a teen in your life who isn't consistent with their skincare regimen & their skin looks clogged- this would be a great parent-teen ritual on Sunday nights to help get their skin clearer. Pregnant & nursing mothers can rejoice- as you can use this! Expecting mothers are advised against using Vitamin A, salicylic acid & other high percentage acids- yet struggle with hormonal breakouts. The only people who might not be an ideal candidate for MicrodermMD would be those with open breakouts or on people with severe rosacea. As for me I love sitting on my couch, watching my Bravo shows & getting my glow on!

Files From the Brow Whisperer

It's that time of year. When summer comes to a close & droves of clients (new & old) come in to get their brows done before heading back to school. Whether high school or college, every one wants to put their best face forward for the first day of classes! This was a new client who had purposefully let her brows grow in a bit, as she had felt her previous esthetician had made them too skinny.  That is the perfect thing to do for me to have as much as possible to work with in terms of creating a shape.
I made sure to be conservative in what I took off, because she had worked hard to grow them in. I also streamlined them a bit above, as my client had expressed that she felt her brows were too round in our consult prior to the waxing. She was thrilled & though dreading heading back to high school on Monday, will at least be rocking some amazing brows!

5 Things

What a delightfully lazy weekend I've spent with friends.  What have I reached for time & again over the last few days? Always, my trusty Tory Burch sunglasses.  I'm also 'that' girl obsessively protecting her skin while out on friends' decks. What can I say? I'm an esthetician, plus just last week I had the Clear & Brilliant laser treatment. Though I would like to be wearing a full bee keeper's uniform, reaching for Physicians Formula's Healthy Wear SPF 50 Powder Foundation & L'Oreal's Colour Riche Balm SPF 15 helps me feel protected.
A little Patron Silver on the rocks with a lot of lime wedges = crisp, refreshing heaven.
I totally fibbed & passed off pasta salad I brought to a cookout yesterday as my own. "Sure I made it from scratch."  As in, yes I opened the box, cooked the pasta & added mayo. Done & delicious. How have you spent the holiday weekend Beauties?

We've all lost a beloved technician at one point in our lives- we move, they retire, babies enter the equation... What do you do when that happens? Word of mouth has been my best champion.  Put it out there on Facebook or Twitter. Better yet, if you see someone with a great haircut or fantastic brows- ask them where they go!!!
This new client had been trying out new people since her esthetician moved to California. She had some horror stories & was quite apprehensive. She ended up reaching out to her old esthetician on Facebook, who recommended moi. We're actually friends who used to work together! It's a small world! Luckily this client had let her brows grow back in after her previous experiences to give me a lot to work with.  If you looking to start fresh- you have to be willing to do that.  I trimmed & streamlined her shape, which 'ta da' - she loved!

It's the start of summer wedding season & nothing pulls a bride or the bridal party together more than getting your brows done!
For this bridesmaid we didn't do anything crazy, but cleaned up her brows for a more streamlined look.  If you are going to have your make-up professionally done for an event, I always suggest getting your brows waxed at least 3 days prior.  We exfoliate the skin where ever we apply the wax- so you don't want a different skin texture on various areas of the face when getting a make-up application. Hope you have a happy weekend Beauties!

Skin Cancer Awareness Month

May is skin cancer awareness month, something near & dear to my heart being an esthetican. We are seeing more & more cases every year on younger clients- so it's so important for me to educate clients on this largely preventable form of cancer. I wanted to address some myths throughout the month. Here's one common misconception: That the higher the skin protection factor (SPF) the better.

Truth:

SPF ratings can be misleading & are soon to be revised by the FDA. The Food & Drug Administration's SPF ratings only apply to protection from UVB rays. A person needs sun protection that offers both chemical & physical blockers in addition to anti-oxidants. Sometimes a high SPF (for example SPF 100) can offer a false sense of security & could possibly introduce more potentially harmful chemicals to the body. It's important to realize that an an SPF of 40 only has about 1% more protection than an SPF of 30. I always advise using an SPF 30 on a daily basis- applying it to face, decollete & tops of hands {hands are a huge indicator of age!} Remember if outside on vacation- you need to reapply at least every 90-120 minutes!

Peace. Love. SPF. M
